Bioluminescence is a portrait of life in the deep sea. Bioluminescence is light produced by a chemical reaction within a living organism. Most bioluminescent organisms are found in the ocean. These bioluminescent marine species include fish, bacteria, and jellies. They can turn it on and off, for a variety of both offensive and defensive strategies ranging from avoiding predators to finding their next meal — or even a mate.
